The village with unique wells and the chapel on the water

The village Popel'nyky, Sniatyn region, Ivano-frankivs'k oblast is situated on the left bank of the river Cheremosh, which separates Halychyna and Bukovyna.

According to the professor Ksavirij Mrochka and Mykhajlo Bazhans'kyj the village Popel'nyky was founded in 1365. The fortress Popel'nyky was standing on the borders with the Ottoman Empire. There is the information, that the fortrees - Popel'nyky was the small town.

There are different versions of the origin of the village. In one of them it is said, from the previous fortification were only ashes.Since then, the place of the destroyed fortress became known as Popelnyky. In the XVI century the village was called Popelneyu and then Popelnyky. In the XIV century the city was largely destroyed by the Turks, and residents who remained began to settle north of the river Cheremosh.

It is interesting that, there are more than twenty chapels in the village that were built during the years of Ukraine's independence. However, special attention is paid to the newly constructed chapel of the Holy Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist of the Lord. This is the first chapel in western Ukraine built at the source by the donations of parishioners. Another cultural and historical monument of the village is the Church of Archangel Michael, built by the community in 1837. The wooden five-domed shrine with the graveyard located around decorates village center and belongs to the UOC-KP.

The village extends more than twelve miles. Today there are more than two thousand people. Anyone who comes here for the first time, can not mention cleanliness of local residents and their homes. A special attention is drawn to unusual wells that adorn almost every homestead in the village. That just does not come up with local gazdy to surprise people.

So on the one yard well disguised as a real teapot! Moreover, the picture supplys a decorative pot that supposedly symbolizes the friendliness and hospitality of the hosts. At another yard a beautiful pink swan sits. It is a well too, but someone decided to disguise the source of galantine under the mountain! Local people say that these wells do not mean nothing much unusual. People build them into their backyards for beauty.

But believe me, these decorations are worth to be seen. However, not one of galantine is interested in the Carpathian village. If you have the chance to visit these parts, do not deny the pleasure to taste delicious banosh, swim in Cheremosh and feel the sincerity and hospitality of the local people.
